Life history, repetitive loading, and the mechanobiology of cortical and trabecular bone among athletes

Talk Abstract

The relationship between skeletal form and function is central to interpretation in human paleontology, yet studies of the influence of activity on skeletal variation among living humans reveals the underlying complexity of influences on skeletal variation. In this presentation I review recent research on the relationship between training and skeletal variation in both cortical and trabecular bone among living athletes. The results reveal both a general correspondence between training history and the quality and quantity of cortical bone, but also tissue and location specific differences in the form/function relationship, and variation throughout the life-course.
